Cowm Leisure (Whitworth) - Off Road Facility and galleries page

Cowm Leisure is a 150 acre site which features natural terrain for all off-road vehicles. They have been organising 4x4 play days

and trails events for the past 5 years and are becoming well established as an excellent motor sport facility.

4x4 Information.

The Quarry is generally open on the last Sunday of each month and allows you to bring your own vehicle and spend some time

driving safely off-road without having to worry about tearing up green lanes or rights of access. ( Vehicles must be road taxed

and new restrictions will apply June 29th 'inclusive' - All participants who attend the 4x4 days will have to produce a current UK

driving licence. Also copies of insurance and MOT will need to be kept in the vehicles at all times).

.

There are usually 2 routes available to explore around the site these are altered or reversed on a regular basis which means the

course offers new challenges each time you attend. The 2 routes run parallel with each other and in the same direction around

the facility allowing you plenty of time to see what everyone is getting up to.

The GREEN Route :- This allows all drivers whether novices or seasoned off-roaders to sample the delights of taking your

pride and joy off-road and experiencing just what it was made for. Generally consists of rough quarry tracks with moderate

climbs and descents, a few axle twisters and usually a bit of wading through the famous top lake ( this varies from a few

inches to a few feet depending on the recent rainfall ) . This route can be enjoyed by all off-roaders ( excludes 4 wheel drive

cars !!), Road tyres should get you around the green route as Road tyres should get you around the green route as long as

drive sensibly, All Terrain tyres would be a bonus.

The RED Route :- This is for the more seasoned drivers and generally requires Mud-Terrain tyres and a few vehicle modifications

such as Diff guards, rock sliders and a snorkel might be handy. The route consists of mud ponds ( I do mean mud !! ), rock

crawling , steep climbs and descents, wading as deep as you dare and quite often the most testing mud run you will ever see

should you want a real challenge. I would recommend this route be driven with a navigator (someone to climb onto your bonnet

and attach a tow rope for when you become stuck !! ). Should you find yourself needing assistance there will always be

someone to lend a hand or give you a tow should you need it.

There are qualified first aiders and Marshals on the site equipped with radios and recovery vehicles are on standby to deal with

any eventuality. The site was an old quarry and consists of many steep and dangerous drops which have been cordoned off

with barriers and fences  for your safety. The facility does not offer a general free for all go anywhere you want policy, The 2

routes must be adhered to for your benefit and the safety of others. As with all off-road sites the Marshalls at Cowm Leisure are

there to look after your welfare. When the action starts in the morning a Cowm Marshall generally leads the way round for one

lap to show people the green route and for anyone wanting to have a go at the red route it is suggested they walk any parts of

the section they are unsure of prior to driving it.

Facilities.

The site has a set of toilets located near the entrance and a second set towards the top end of the site. There is also an

excellent butty van run by Toni, Hot food and drinks are available all day.

Other Events.

Cowm Leisure is also home to excellent trials bike sections which during 2007 hosted a British championship round as well as

the Cowm Leisure trials academy run by riders such as Graham Jarvis. The Scorpion Challenge also using the testing terrain

for one of its rounds. Off road driving courses are available (Introductory and advanced ) run by BORDA qualified instructors.
